How does Oxytocin work?
Oxytocin exerts its effects by binding to specific G protein-coupled receptors, known as oxytocin receptors (OXTRs), which are expressed in various tissues throughout the body, including the brain, uterus, and mammary glands. Upon binding to OXTRs, oxytocin triggers intracellular signaling cascades that lead to diverse physiological responses, such as uterine contractions during labor, milk ejection during lactation, and the promotion of social bonding and trust. In the central nervous system, oxytocin acts as a neuromodulator, influencing the activity of various neurotransmitter systems, such as dopamine, serotonin, and GABA. These interactions are thought to underlie oxytocin's effects on social behavior, stress regulation, and emotional processing. In mammal models, oxytocin has been examined for its effects on the salience of social stimuli, social recognition and memory, and anxiety and stress responses.
Handling & Safety
Handle as a laboratory research chemical of unknown hazard. Use gloves and eye protection, avoid inhalation of the lyophilized powder, and follow standard laboratory handling procedures.
Reconstitute and store according to the product label. Lyophilized material should be kept cool, dry and protected from light; reconstituted material should be held at 2-8°C and protected from light.
The safety profile of Oxytocin Research Spray Kit has not been established. This compound is supplied for laboratory research use only and is not approved for human or veterinary use.
Summary
Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid neuropeptide that acts at the oxytocin receptor (OXTR), a G-protein-coupled receptor found in the brain and peripheral tissues. Published research uses it to study receptor signalling and neuroendocrine pathways in cell and animal models. For laboratory research use only; not for human or veterinary use.
